# Automation

> Autoresponders and drip sequences

## Autoresponders

Trigger a single email off a subscriber event — a **welcome** email when someone subscribes, a **goodbye** email when someone unsubscribes.

## Drip sequences

A linear sequence of steps, each with its own delay before the next one fires — add or edit steps from **Automations → \[automation] → Steps**.

  Sequences in this version are linear (one path, no branching logic based on subscriber behavior) — each step runs in order, on its own timer, for every subscriber that enters the automation.

Like campaigns, every automation step is processed by the background queue on the [scheduler cron](/mailer/installation#background-processes) — it won't fire if the queue worker or cron isn't actually running.
